Dr. Adam Back is a legendary cryptographer, cypherpunk, and a foundational pioneer of digital cash. He is the inventor of Hashcash (1997), the Proof-of-Work algorithm used by Satoshi Nakamoto to secure the Bitcoin blockchain, and is one of the few people cited directly in the Bitcoin Whitepaper. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Exeter. Under his leadership as CEO, Blockstream has built the Liquid sidechain, deployed global blockchain satellite broadcasts, and developed the open-source Jade hardware wallet to bring trustless physical security to the mass market.

The Bitcoin Network Layer Stack
Blockstream provides the core digital and physical rails for the Bitcoin ecosystem. Its consumer wallet, Blockstream Jade, utilizes a Virtual Secure Element backed by a blind oracle server model to prevent physical chip extraction while remaining 100% open-source. Beyond hardware, the company maintains the federated Liquid Network sidechain, operates the global Blockstream Satellite array, and actively develops Core Lightning (CLN).
Network Protocols
- Liquid Network (Federated Sidechain)
- Core Lightning (CLN Implementation)
- Blockstream Satellite Broadcasts
- Greenlight (Hosted LN Nodes)
Hardware Architecture
- Blockstream Jade (ESP32 Chip)
- Virtual Secure Element (Blinded Oracle)
- Air-Gapped QR Interface (PSBT)
- Blockstream Green Companion App
Strategic Value
Blockstream secures Bitcoin at both the protocol and consumer levels. By bypassing proprietary, closed-source secure elements with their open-source blind oracle architecture, Jade ensures a verifiably backdoor-free signing device. Their sidechain and satellite networks provide structural redundancy to protect the global monetary network from physical internet outages or on-chain transaction congestion.
